Hey I liked the article, pretty much all new information to me. Thank you.
And great images.

Oops!

Joel, I got carried away with my philosophizing and forgot to respond to your suggestion on cloud storage. I don't know if it would be better handled in a separate article or in the storage article. Let me think about it and we'll see what we can do.

Joel, thanks for the thumbs up! My goal is to write at a level which begins to make things understandable to people who don't have much computer background- to give them a foundation from which they can branch out on their own and take themselves farther. Most itnewb members probably already have a working knowledge of the things I have written about and will write about in the future but I think itnewb should also offer content to people just starting out. In terms of size, they are a far larger group.

Hardware is not my strong point, so this is a welcomed article... I was unaware what the levels of the cpu cache meant and also that there is dynamic and static ram :S

I’m not sure if it is really necessary to mention in this article, as it could easily be an article in itself. But maybe a note on cloud storage would be helpful

Very well written article, Thumbs Up =)

I responded to Mrinmay and Guillame in a personal message and said I would add Blu-Ray to the article and add a little to hard drive. But I felt some of the hard drive suggestions could best be covered in an Intro to hard drives as you suggest, Andrew. I'm working on both paths now and we'll see if I can't finish the storage article by this weekend and also start on the Intro to hard drives.

Hardware is one of my most neglected areas of expertise, but as far as I can tell this article appears solid. You've done a good job of dumbing things down (but not too much) so absolute beginners can start to wrap their heads around computer storage and memory.

I agree with Mrinmay that Blue-Ray should be covered at the end of the article much like you covered CD and DVD. I also want to see the things Guillaume mentioned covered, but not in this article. I think an "Introduction to Computer Hard Disk Drives" and "Introduction to Computer File Systems" would be nice.

These articles are for newbs.. Not savvy folk that already know most of these things. In time, we can write more intermediate and advanced guides to hardware and so on.

Way to jump in, contribute valuable content and help us move forward with the newb initiative.

Thank you, A+ from me!!

This is very good article. But I think Blue-Ray Disk must also be present.

Great work Tim.

Maybe you could have added a few words about Hard Disk Drives' differents interfaces, their cache and Rotation Speed (maybe, a word about partitionning and filesystems) ; maybe something about Solid State Drives too.
